Dental Implants

Missing teeth can make you self-conscious about your smile, make it difficult to chew or speak, and lead to serious oral health concerns.

Implants replace the tooth root and provide the ultimate support for crowns, bridges, and dentures.

The dental experts at Desert Springs Family Dentistry in Tucson, AZ, can work with you to restore form and function to your smile.

The Benefits of Dental Implant Treatment

Longevity and Durability

With appropriate care and the attention of your Tucson, AZ, dentist, dental implants can last for more than 40 years. While the restoration attached to the implant will not last as long, the implant itself can last the rest of your life.

Jawbone Strength

When a tooth is lost, it causes the jawbone to gradually shrink and change shape, leading to dental misalignment and distortion of your facial features. Unlike other restorations, implants replace the entire tooth and provide the stimulation needed to stop jaw atrophy.

Security and Confidence

Titanium implants fuse to your jawbone, so they won't allow your restorations to slip or come loose in the way that traditional dentures can. You can speak, eat, and laugh with total confidence.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small post surgically placed in the jaw and acts as a tooth root. To create a complete restoration, a connector piece called an abutment will be attached to the implant, and then the restoration itself will be added.

Desert Springs Family Dentistry in Tucson, AZ, can top dental implants with a variety of dental restorations to rebuild your smile and give you the functional bite that will let you enjoy your favorite foods again.

One dental implant can support a single tooth, while multiple implants can be used to support a dental bridge or even a full denture.

Replacing a Single Tooth with an Implant, Abutment, and Crown

Dental Implant Basics

Dental implants are titanium posts that fuse to your jaw and provide a firm foundation for restorations like crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Traditional dental implant treatment can take six months or longer to complete. The process begins with an initial surgery, during which an oral surgeon will make a small incision in your gums and insert the implant into the bone tissue. After the implant is placed, a healing period of four to six months is required for the implant to fuse to the bone.

After the first healing period, another procedure is required to attach an abutment to the implant. After a second healing period of about two weeks, the dentists at Desert Springs Family Dentistry in Tucson, AZ, can attach your custom-made dental restoration to the abutment.

If You Are Missing a Tooth, You Are Not Alone

Been a patient of Dr. Burrows for years. He and his staff run a very professional, friendly office. And he has a good sense of humor, which is always a nice touch.

Do I Qualify for Dental Implants?

During a consultation at our Tucson office, we can evaluate your candidacy for implant treatment based on your medical history and personal goals. Some factors that affect candidacy include:

Low Bone Density in the Jaw

If your natural tooth has been missing for a significant amount of time, the atrophy of the jaw may be too significant to support an implant. In some cases, this can be corrected through a bone grafting procedure.

Smoking

Smoking negatively affects your oral health, impairing your ability to heal and increasing the risk of an implant failing to fuse to the bone properly. Smokers who are considering dental implants should quit several months ahead of the surgery. Ideally, you should drop the habit permanently.

Gum Disease

Unhealthy gums may not heal properly after surgery. Periodontal issues will need to be addressed before implant treatment.

I had not been to the dentist in over 5 years. Like a lot of people, going to the dentist is uncomfortable for me. Desert Springs and their hygienist Chrisse made me super comfortable and made sure that I didn’t have any pain. I can say that my mouth feels 100% better since my cleaning and they made sure I would be back for my next cleaning. If you are someone who is apprehensive about the dentist, this is the place to go. No judgement, just great care. Thank you so much!
